South Korean companies have received their worst 바카라 게임 GLOBAL 500 report card. The 2024 rankings, released on Monday, August 5 (EST), saw no new South Korean entrants, and a significant increase in the number of companies excluded from the ranking. This marks the first time since 2020 that the number of South Korean companies on the list has declined.

The 바카라 게임 GLOBAL 500 ranks the top 500 companies in the world by revenue. Initially popular among U.S. companies as the 바카라 게임 500, the list was expanded to include global companies and published separately in 1995. 바카라 게임 Korea has been publishing the 바카라 게임 500 Korea since 2009.

Three companies were pushed off the list.

A total of 15 Korean companies made it to the 2024 바카라 게임 GLOBAL 500, down from 18 last year. Three companies dropped from the list: CJ, Samsung Life Insurance, and SK Hynix, which were ranked 481st, 496th, and 437th, respectively, in the 2023 edition.

CJ posted revenue of 41.352 trillion won last year, up from 40.9249 trillion won the year before. However, the growth rate was only 1.05 percent, which affected its ranking due to the "bottom-end characteristic" of fluctuating positions. CJ's recent poor performance has raised concerns as it operates some of the businesses most closely associated with the Korean Wave.

Samsung Life Insurance posted a flat performance last year amidst high volatility in investment income and intensified competition following the adoption of IFRS17. Despite posting an operating profit and net profit of KRW 2 trillion, unchanged from the previous year, it slipped in the rankings due to its bottom-line characteristics. For insurers, 바카라 게임 separately calculates premiums and annuity income, investment income, realized capital gains and losses, and other income, rather than revenue.

SK Hynix was hit hard by the decline in global memory demand that started in the fourth quarter of 2022. Its sales shrank to 32.7657 trillion won in 2023 from 44.6216 trillion won the previous year. However, the company is expected to return to the list next year as demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) surged from the second half of last year, and the semiconductor cycle recovery is in sight.

Even companies that remain in the top 10 have question marks over their competitiveness.

The remaining companies on the 바카라 게임 GLOBAL 500 also saw several declines. Nine of the 15 companies, including Samsung Electronics, fell in the rankings. These drops were due to either a deteriorating industry or a decrease in competitiveness, with most companies affected by both factors, raising concerns.

Samsung Electronics exemplifies this trend. After 26 years as the number one South Korean company since 1999, Samsung has continued its downward trend from last year. It fell seven places from 18th in 2022 to 25th in 2023 and dropped another six places to 31st this year. Similar to SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics is expected to improve its ranking next year, but uncertainty is growing as it appears to be losing ground in the HBM race.

Of the six companies that rose in the rankings, only three (Hyundai Motor Group, Kia Motors, and Hyundai Mobis) attributed their gains to "improved competitiveness at home." The rest were heavily influenced by industry and regional specificities.

"This is a result of the economic downturn over the past two years," said Doo-young Yoon, director of 바카라 게임 Korea's Global Enterprise Research Center. "In particular, industries such as semiconductors and secondary batteries, where Korean conglomerates have entered, are sensitive to economic fluctuations, so their poor performance has been relatively highlighted."
